Tribunus Laticlavius

  • The Tribunus Laticlavius was the second in Command to the Legate of the Roman Legion.
  • The name Laticlavius came from the style of Roman Toga worn by the Senatorial class, which had a broad stripe.

Description

  • He was a Tribune from the Patrician Class, appointed either by the Roman Emperor or the Roman Senate.
  • Often, he would be a young and inexperienced officer, starting out on the first rung of the Cursus Honorum.
  • He would be advised by the very experienced Prefectus Castrorum, who was third in Command.
  • If the Legate died in Battle, the Tribunus Laticlavius replaced him.
  • British Army equivalent: Brigadier General.
