Tutankhamun

  • Tutankhamun was the Pharaoh of Egypt between c.1332-1323 BCE.
  • ‘King Tut’ has become the most famous of all the Pharaohs, popularising the ‘Curse of the Pharaohs’, with his Mummy being the inspiration behind many horror movies.

Tutankhamun's Tomb

  • Today, the Tomb can be visited in the Valley of the Kings at Luxor in Egypt.
  • Tutankhamun’s Mummy is back in the Tomb in a sealed glass box to prevent decomposition.

Biography

  • Tutankhamun was born in c. 1341 BCE, became Pharaoh at the age of nine, and died when he was 18 years old.
  • He reigned for about nine years.
  • Tutankhamun’s father was Akhenaten, and his stepmother was Nerfertiti.
  • His memory was erased after his death, and his Tomb lost until 1922.

Discovery of Tutankhamun’s Tomb

  • His Tomb was discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings at Luxor.
  • As a result, Tutankhamun became the most famous Pharaoh of them all.

The Finds

  • Included in the Finds were:
    • A Funerary Gold Mask pf Tutankhamun.
    • A Wooden bust of Tutankhamun.
    • Tutankhamun’s Mummy in a Golden Sarcophagus.
    • Two Royal daggers:
      • One dagger blade was made of gold, for royalty.
      • The other blade was made of Iron. This was unusual as there was no iron in Egypt, and Daggers were usually made of Bronze or Copper.
    • An Iron Pillow found under his head. The iron has subsequently been identified to have come from a Meteorite.
    • A Pectoral with a winged Scarab and Lotus flowers.
    • A Pair of Slings.

Worldwide Tour

  • A worldwide Tour of the Finds was exhibited in Museums around the world between 1972 and 1979.
  • Another Tour ran between 2004 and 2011 and included artefacts from the Tombs of the other Pharaohs.
