- Utrecht is a cathedral city located on the river Rhine in the Province of Utrecht in the Netherlands. It was the most important city until Amsterdam became pre-eminent after 1579.
- It was originally a Roman Fort called Ultra Traiectum, built in c.50 CE for a unit of 500 soldiers in the Province of Germania Inferior.
History
- The Roman Fort is located under Dom Square and the Remains are no longer visible today, although excavations of the site have been conducted.
- It was part of a defensive chain of forts known as the Limes Germanicus situated along the Rhine in Germania Inferior.
- In 69 BCE the fort was destroyed during the Batavian Revolt.
- From c.88-270 CE the Fort was occupied by the Cohors II Hispanorum Peditata.
