Varus

  • Publius Quinctilius Varus (46 BCE-9 CE) was a Roman General under Augustus.
  • He is noted for the Roman failure at the Battle of Teutoburg Forest in 9 CE.

Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (9 CE)

  • In 9 CE, Varus had the misfortune of experiencing one of the greatest defeats of the Roman Army at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in Germania where he lost 3 Legions and was killed.
  • In 10 CE, his nephew, the Consul Publius Cornelius Dolabella, rebuilt the Porta Caelimontana, on the Servian Wall, and renamed it the Arch of Dolabella, possibly to alleviate some of the disgrace.
