- In Roman Law, Vectigalia were Customs Duties paid on the Import and Export of certain types of Merchandise.
Types of Vectigalia
- Portorium
- A Duty levied on Entry or Departure of Goods from the Province. If a City was allowed to raise this tax it was shared with the Public Treasury.
- This was also a 25% Duty imposed on all Goods entering the Roman Empire from beyond its Frontiers.
- Ansarium or Foricarium’
- This was a Duty levied at the entrance to towns and cities on Foodstuffs.
- Edulia
- This was a Duty levied in the Markets on Wine and certain food items.
- Road and Bridge Tolls
- These were Tolls paid by Travellers for passing over Roads and Bridges. Tolls were mentioned by Pliny the Elder in Arabia.
