Vectis

• Vectis was the Roman name for the Isle of Wight.
• It is the largest island in England and is located off the south coast of Hampshire from which it is separated by the Solent.

History

• It is possibly associated with Ictis or Mictis in the Tin Islands which formed part of the Ancient Tin Trade of Britannia.

The Roman Sites

• Newport Roman Villa
  • The site holds a reconstruction of a Roman farmhouse, originally built in c.280 CE.
• Carisbrooke Castle
  • The Medieval castle is possibly built on the site of one of the Roman Saxon Shore Forts
• Brading Roman Villa
  • Located on a hillside near Brading the villa holds excellent mosaics.
