- Venice is a Port city built on a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea, in the Veneto Region of northern Italy. It was built by sinking wooden piles into one hundred islands which created a network of canals.
- It was built after 452 CE, when Attila the Hun invaded Italy and the Roman population fled into the lagoon, from the city of Altinum.
Altinum
- Altinum is the Ruins of a Roman city located opposite Venice in Italy.
- It was rediscovered in 2009, where it was found buried in the marshes in a well preserved condition.
Republic of Venice (697-1797 CE)
- Venice was the capital of the Maritime Empire of the Republic of Venice (697-1797 CE), also known as La Serenissima. It was ruled by the Doge and the Great Council of Venice.
- The Byzantine Empire was their main trading partner and war ally.
- The rivals to Venice were the Republic of Genoa (1005-1815 CE), the Vikings (750-1050 CE), the Arab Navy (652-1453 CE) and after the Fall of Constantinople, the Ottoman Empire (1453-1922 CE)..
- In 1204 CE, the Venetians participated in the Sack of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade and brought back a Roman Quadriga, probably from the Hippodrome, and placed it on St. Mark’s Cathedral.
Venetian Navy
- The navy was housed in the Venice Arsenal which was also the shipyard that built the fleet.
- After 1268 CE, the Venetians maintained a Standing Fleet to patrol the Adriatic.
- In the 1290’s CE, the Great Galleys appeared, carrying both sail and up to 180 rowers. They were able to safely transport a large amount of cargo and to defend themselves.
