Vicarello Cups

  • The Vicarello Cups are four Roman drinking cups made of silver dating to the first century CE.
  • All four cups are inscribed with the complete Road Itinerary from Gades to Rome, including each stop and the distances between them.

Description

  • They were discovered in 1852 at the Roman Baths (Aquae Apollinares) of Vicarello in Italy.
  • They were part of a Find which included 34 vessels (of which 12 were inscribed) and 5,000 bronze coins of Greek, Roman and Etruscan origin.
  • The items are thought to have been votive offerings.
