Villa Jovis

  • The Villa Jovis, meaning the Villa of Jupiter, was the Palace of the Emperor Tiberius and is located on the Island of Capri.
  • Tiberius retired here in 26 CE and lived here until his death in 37 CE.

Description

  • The Villa was built on a hill top, commanding spectacular views.
  • It was a huge Palace with four wings, east, west, south and north.
  • An 82 ft (25 m) high lighthouse was built adjacent to the villa, and could send and receive signals from the mainland.
  • It was in line of sight with two other Roman Lighthouses nearby, one at Cape Miseno and the other at Campanella Point.
