Volga Delta

  • The Volga Delta is Europe’s largest River Delta and natural wetland formed where the Volga, Europe’s longest river at 2,194 miles (3,531km), drains into the Caspian Sea.
  • It is mostly located in the Astrakhan Oblast of Russia, and the city of Astrakhan is 37 miles (60km) upstream of the Delta. The remaining part is in Kazakhstan.

Astrakhansky State Nature Reserve

  • Founded in 1919, the Reserve is home to 61 species of fish including Sturgeon, which produces caviar.
  • There are 280 species of birds, of which 27 species are endangered.
  • The Volga Delta is on several Bird Migration Routes, with millions of birds passing through every year.
  • The Caspian Lotus grows in the Delta, creating fields of pink flowers floating in the waters.
