Vulgate

  • The Vulgate is the standard Text of The Bible used by the Roman Catholic Church today.
  • It was revised and compiled from the old latin texts of the Vetus Latina by St. Jerome (347-420 CE).

Description

  • Commenced in 382 CE under the instructions of Pope Damasus I, Saint Jerome had completed the translation of the four Gospels into Latin by 384 CE. He revised all the texts of the original Vetus Latina (‘old Latin translations’).
  • Between 390-405 CE. he then translated the Old Testament from the original Hebrew Bible into Latin.
  • It became known as the ‘Versio Vulgata’ or the ‘Vulgate’, and became the standard Bible Text used by the Roman Catholic Church.
