Walls of Ancient Rome

  • Ancient Rome was surrounded by two defensive walls.
  • The first was the Servian Wall built in the 4th century BCE, and the second was the Aurelian Walls completed in 275 CE.

Servian Wall (4th century BCE)

  • Also known as the Republican Wall. It was built after Brennius had sacked Rome in 390 BCE.
  • The Servian Wall successfully prevented Hannibal from taking the city. Without siege engines he did not attempt its capture.

Aurelian Walls (270 – 275 CE)

  •  Aurelian (270-275 CE) built a second much longer outer wall to protect the expanded city against the threat of Germanic Invasions.
