Who or whom?

  • In English Grammar, ‘Who’ must be used in the subject position and ‘Whom’ must be used in the object position and after a Preposition.

A simple rule

  • A simple rule for when to use ‘who’ or ‘whom’, is to play around with the sentence:
    • Try substituting ‘Who’ for ‘He’ or ‘She’ (Subject pronoun: the one doing the action)
    • And ‘Whom’ for ‘Him’ or ‘Her’ (Object pronoun: the one receiving the action)
  • For Example
    • ‘He is cooking supper’, not ‘Him is cooking supper’, so it’s ‘Who is cooking supper?’.
    • But ‘Do you like her?’, not ‘Do you like she?’, so it’s ‘Whom do you like?’
  • Pronouns
    • I, me, mine, she, he, it, we, us, them.
    • My, our, your, their, its, his, her.
