Yeovil

  • Yeovil is a town located on the river Yeo in the county of Somerset.
  • It was founded by the Saxons in c.880 CE.

Roman History

  • Although there is some evidence of a town during the Roman occupation, no name survives.
  • However, it was crossed by an important Roman Road through what is now the centre of the town.
  • The road through Yeovil connected Ilchester on the Fosse Way with Dorchester on the south coast.
  • The Roman road aligns with the modern A37.
  • Several Roman villas also existed in the area.
