- Zadar is a Port city on the Adriatic coast located in the Ravni Kotari Region in the County of Zadar in northern Croatia. Zadar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site noted for its Venetian Walls, Gates and Bastions which surround Zadar old town.
- It became Roman Ladera in 59 BCE and was an important port city in the Province of Noricum.
History
- It was founded by the Liburnians in the 9th century BCE.
- Zadar is first mentioned as Ladasinoi in 384 BCE, as allies of the indigenous population of Hvar against a Greek colony called Pharos.
- They set off from Zadar and besieged Pharos with 10,000 men in 300 ships, but the siege was relieved by a Greek Fleet from Syracuse who were victorious.
