Artaxata

  • Artaxata was the ancient capital of Armenia between 176 BCE – 120 CE. The Ruins are located 5 miles (8km) south of modern Artashat.
  • It was founded by King Artaxes I in 176 BCE.

History

  • In 59 CE, Armenia was invaded by the Roman Legions from Cappadocia under General Gaius Domitius Corbulo, who razed Artaxata.
  • It was rebuilt by Nero and briefly called Neronia.
  • Hadrian's General Marcus Priscus invaded Armenia and razed the city in 162 CE.

  • Khor Virap, Museum of Artaxata
    • Located at the Monastery of Khor Virap, 5 miles (8km) south of Artashat, near the Armenian Mount Ararat.
    • The Museum holds the Finds from Artaxata.
