- Artaxata was the ancient capital of Armenia between 176 BCE – 120 CE. The Ruins are located 5 miles (8km) south of modern Artashat.
- It was founded by King Artaxes I in 176 BCE.
History
- In 59 CE, Armenia was invaded by the Roman Legions from Cappadocia under General Gaius Domitius Corbulo, who razed Artaxata.
- It was rebuilt by Nero and briefly called Neronia.
- Hadrian's General Marcus Priscus invaded Armenia and razed the city in 162 CE.
