Barcelona

  • Barcelona is a port city on the Mediterranean, capital of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia and the second largest city in Spain. According to legend, the city is named after Hannibal‘s father, Hamilcar Barca.
  • In c. 15 BCE, the Romans renamed the town ‘Colonia Faventia Julia Augusta Pia Barcino’ or more simply, Barcino. It was located in the Province of Hispania Tarraconensis on the Via Augusta.

Roman Sites

  • The Ruins of ‘Barcino’ (Columns and Walls) are integrated into the modern Barri Gottic (Gothic Quarter)
  • The Cathedral ‘Basilica La Seu’ was founded in c. 343 CE.

Museums

  • Museu d’Historia de la Ciutat de Barcelona: MUHBA
    • This museum houses the Mosaics, Wall Paintings, Graves and other Roman remains from Barcino.
