Bosham

  • Bosham is a waterside village with a harbour on a peninsular which projects into Chichester Harbour.
  • It is located 2 miles (3.2km) from Chichester on the south coast of West Sussex.

History

  • Portus Magnus (2nd century CE)
    • Bosham corresponds to the latitude and longitude of the Roman Portus Magnus (Great Harbour) marked on Ptolemy's Geographia, a 2nd century CE map of the known world. A local tradition exists that Vespasian had a villa in Bosham, but no evidence of it has ever been found.
  • Saxon Navy (1066 CE)
    • Both the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and the Bayeux Tapestry refer to Bosham as the Naval Base for the Fleet of Harold Godwinson. However, no physical remains have ever been found.
  • Bayeux Tapestry (1066 CE)
    • The name Bosham Church is written in the Bayeux Tapestry and records the meeting in 1064 CE between Harold Godwinson, Edward the Confessor and William of Normandy to establish which would inherit the throne of England after Edward’s death.
