- The Brandenburg Gate is a Gateway in central Mitte area of Berlin and was completed in a Neo-classical style by the King of Prussia, Frederick William II.
- It has been at the centre of historical events in Germany since its inauguration in 1791.
History
- The Gate design was based on the Propylaea, the Gateway to the Acropolis in Athens, with the aim of portraying Berlin as the ‘new Athens’.
- It has five passageways through 12 Doric columns, topped by a Quadriga driven by the Goddess Nike, known to the Romans as Victoria.
- It is located in the Pariser Platz, and forms the entry to a boulevard of Linden trees known as the Unter den Linden, which leads to the Berlin Palace and the Berlin Cathedral.
