- Caratacus was a British King of the Catuvellauni, known as Caradog in Welsh.
- He was the son of King Cunobelinus.
Biography
- Between 43-50 CE, he reigned as King of the Britons and led a successful British Resistance against the Roman Occupation.
- But in 51 CE Caratacus was defeated by Scapula in battle, the location of the battle is unknown, but may have been British Camp, in the Malvern Hills, Worcestershire.
- Although his wife and daughter were taken prisoner, Caratacus fled to Queen Cartimandua of the Brigantes, but she handed him over to the Romans.
Prisoner in Rome
- In 51 CE, Claudius paraded Caratacus in Rome.
- Tacitus stated that before his execution he was allowed to speak to the Roman Senate where he gave a famous speech.
- Claudius then pardoned him and allowed him to live in Rome.
