- Durham is a cathedral city founded in 995 CE on the river Wear in the County of Durham in the Region of North East England. Durham’s medieval castle and cathedral have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- It was the Roman fort of Dunelmum in the Province of Britannia.
Museums
- Museum of Archeology, Durham
- Located at Palace Green Library, Durham, DH1 3RN.
- Founded in 1833, the Museum holds Finds from all periods of History including local Roman Finds.
- The Museum holds the Lanchester Diploma, a Bronze Diploma marking the official discharge of a Roman sailor after 26 years of service in the Classis Germanica, the Roman Navy in Germany.
- There is also an Online Exhibition explaining Binchester Roman Fort.

- A branch of Dere Street forked off at Binchester and ran due north to Newcastle.
