- Fordingbridge is a town in the New Forest in the County of Hampshire.
- It is 3 miles (5km) southeast of Rockbourne Roman Villa (1st to 5th century CE). The villa has a museum and the mosaics, hypocaust and baths are visible.
Description
- Rockbourne was a large country villa which was occupied for 400 years between the 1st and 5th centuries CE.
- It eventually had around 40 rooms located in three wings enclosing a courtyard.
- Items excavated from the villa are located in the on-site museum.
Rockbourne Roman Villa Hoard
- In 1967 a hoard of 7,717 bronze coins was found in a pottery jar in the villa, buried around 295 CE.
- Three were silver Denarii, the remainder were mostly bronze and silver-bronze Antoninianii which were issued between 250-290 CE.
- The Hoard has since been dispersed, but 493 coins are on display in the museum.
