Description

  • Rockbourne was a large country villa which was occupied for 400 years between the 1st and 5th centuries CE.
  • It eventually had around 40 rooms located in three wings enclosing a courtyard.
  • Items excavated from the villa are located in the on-site museum.

Rockbourne Roman Villa Hoard

  • In 1967 a hoard of 7,717 bronze coins was found in a pottery jar in the villa, buried around 295 CE.
  • Three were silver Denarii, the remainder were mostly bronze and silver-bronze Antoninianii which were issued between 250-290 CE.
  • The Hoard has since been dispersed, but 493 coins are on display in the museum.
