Glanum

Glanum Roman City
  • Glanum Roman town is located next to Saint-Remy-de-Provence in the Provence-Alpes-Cotes d’Azur Region of southeastern France.
  • Glanum was a Roman Spa Town (now in Ruins) and was the Capital of the Salyens Gallic Tribe founded as an Oppidum in the sixth century BCE. It was in the Province of Gallia Narbonensis and located on the Via Domitia.

History

  • In 27 BCE it was recognised as an Oppidum Latinum and its prosperity was based on being a Health Spa with Spring Waters holding natural healing powers.
  • But in 260 CE it was destroyed by the invading Alemanni, and never reoccupied or rebuilt. The town was then moved to a site nearby and became Saint-Remy-de-Provence, leaving the Roman ruins in situ.

The Roman Sites

  • Glanum was a Spa town whose prosperity was due to its Sacred Spring. Glanum is laid out north-south along a valley. At the northern end are the Public Baths and Residential area, and at the southern end is the Sacred Spring, the Sacred Quarter and the Grotto.
