History
- Iran was Parthia, also known as the Parthian Empire (247 BCE-224 CE), which was located in modern Iran, Iraq and Eastern Turkey, with its capital city at Ctesiphon.
- It then became the Sassanid Empire (224-651 CE).
- Parthia controlled the Silk Road between China and the Roman Empire until it was replaced by the Sassanid Empire (224-651 CE).
- The Parthians and the Romans remained antagonists throughout the Roman Period, with both sides struggling for control of Armenia.
- The Roman Empire kept 8 Legions in the East to deter invasion.
- There were over 10 major wars between the Roman Empire and the Parthian Empire.
Shushtar Roman City and Dam
- Shushtar in Iran, was known as Susa during the Parthian Empire.
- In 260 CE at the Battle of Edessa, the Emperor Valerian became the only Roman Emperor to be taken captive and die in captivity.
- The Persian King, Shapur I, used the captured Roman Legionaries to build a Roman Dam here called Band-e Kaisar.
- In 266 CE the Legionaries also built the nearby city of Bishapur, in the Province of Fars, where they, and Valerian, then lived. The Legionaries built a Palace for Shapur I, with Roman Mosaics.

- This is a combined Roman Bridge and Dam built by the captured Roman Legionaries.
- Bishapur
- This was a Roman city where Valerian lived, also built by the captured Roman Legionaries.
