Lantern Festival

  • The Lantern Festival is a Chinese Festival called ‘Yuan Xiao’.
  • The Festival involves flying paper lanterns painted red to symbolise good fortune, with puzzles written on them to solve, and eating rice balls.

Description

  • The Festival takes place on the 15th day of the first month (first full moon) of the Lunisolar Year in the Lunisolar Calendar. This falls either in February or March.
  • It originates from the Western Han Period (205 BCE – 25 CE).
  • The Festival may originate from Taoism, where the God Tianguan has a birthday on the 15th.
