Formation and Decimation (69 CE)

  • Nero formed the Legion from the sailors of the Classis Misenensis, to defend Rome. However, before they could be properly organised, Nero had committed suicide.
  • The sailors then met the new Emperor Galba at the Milvian Bridge to discuss their official formation into a Legion. Perceiving them as a threat, He responded by sending his troops to overwhelm them. The survivors were then sentenced to Decimation, and afterwards the leaders executed.
  • The next Emperor, Vitellius, sent the Legion to the Rhine.
