Lympne

Portus Lemanis Roman Fort, Lympne. The sea has retreated and Dungeness Power Station is visible on the horizon.
  • Lympne is a village above Romney Marsh in Kent.
  • The Marsh below the village was the location for one of the Saxon Shore Forts called Portus Lemanis. It was originally located on the coast, but is now well inland.

Saxon Shore Forts

  • The Saxon Shore Forts were a chain of Roman Naval Forts in southeastern England that stretched from Portchester to the Wash, whose function was to defend the River estuaries and coastline from Pirate attacks by seaborne invaders.
  • The Forts date to the third century CE and are mentioned in a 4th century CE document known as the Notitia Dignitatum.

Roman Ruins

  • The Ruins of the Saxon Shore Fort are below Lympne Castle in the Marsh beside the Royal Military Canal.
  • The Fort once overlooked the coast, but now the Sea has receded and Dungeness Power Station is visible over 10 miles (16km) away.

Port Lympne

  • Port Lympne is a Hotel and Wildlife Safari Reserve in Lympne located close to the Ruins of Portus Lemanis.
