- Nice is a cathedral and port city on the Mediterranean in the Provence Alpes Cote d’Azur Region of southeastern France.
- It was the Roman town of Cemenelum, now situated in the Nice suburb of Cimiez. Cemenelum was the capital of the Province of Alpes Maritimae.
History
- There were actually two ancient cities in Nice:
- Cemenelum
- This was the Roman town. Cemenelum was created in the late 1st century BCE and made Capital of Alpes Maritimae in 14 BCE.
- Nikaea (Nice)
- This was the Ancient Greek town.
- Cemenelum
- Cohors I Ligurum et Hispanorum
- This was a Roman Alpine Regiment based at Cemenelum, Nice between c. 14-70 CE.
- It then merged with a Spanish unit and moved to Niedenberg in Germania Superior between 116-134 CE.
- Alpine regiments usually contained the tribal name in their title, hence ‘Ligurum’ (Ligurian) and ‘Hispanorum’ (Hispani).
