Roman Booksellers

  • Roman Booksellers were called ‘Taberna Librarii’ and were located in the Argelitum, in the Forum Romanum and in the Vicus Sandalarius, ‘the Street of the Sandalmakers’.
  • Books for sale were listed on the door of the shop. Prices of Books varied around 5 Denarii.

The Scribes

  • The Printing Press wasn’t invented until c.1436 CE.
  • So teams of Scribes, who were Roman Slaves, copied new and ancient Works to supply the demands of Private Libraries and Public Libraries under the Roman Empire.
