Trophy of Augustus, La Turbie
  • The Trophy of the Alps, also known as ‘Tropaeum Alpium’, is a Roman Monument located at La Turbie in the Maritime Alps in the Provence Alpes Cote d’Azur Region of southeastern France.
  • Located 6 miles (10km) from Monaco, it was set up by Augustus in 14 BCE to celebrate his victory over the 44 Alpine Tribes who up to then, had resisted Rome.

Roman Site

  • The huge Roman Monument was on the Via Julia Augusta and marked the Border between Italia and Alpes Maritimae.
  • Its design was influenced by the Trophy of Pompey, which was set up to celebrate the victory of Roman Republican Armies in Spain 71 BCE, and marked the Frontier between Gaul and Hispania.
  • The names of the Tribes are inscribed on the monument.
  • It was restored between 1905 and 1933.
