Ulysses

  • Ulysses was the Roman name for the Greek Hero Odysseus.
  • However, whereas the Greeks venerated Odysseus as a Hero, the Romans viewed Ulysses as a villain.

Virgil and the Aeneid

  • In the Aeneid (29-19 BCE) written by Virgil, Ulysses is described as alternately, cruel, sly or deceitful. The Romans had a different code of honour and did not admire success achieved through stratagems.
  • The Romans considered themselves to be the descendants of the defeated Prince Aeneas of Troy.
  • In Roman Mythology, Prince Aeneas is the Trojan Hero and the first Hero of Rome, forefather of Romulus and Remus.
