- Vaison-La-Romaine is a cathedral town located on the river Ouveze in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur Region of southeastern France.
- It was the Roman town of Vasio Julia Vocontiorum, the capital of the Voconti Gallic tribe, in the Province of Gallia Narbonensis.
History
- Vasio Vocontiorum developed below the old tribal Oppidum during the 1st century CE, with the construction of Villas, a Theatre, two Aqueducts, Baths and a Bridge.
- The Roman town was one of the richest cities in the Province.
- After the Germanic invasions at the end of the Roman Empire, the lower town was abandoned and the Medieval town was built on the hill above the Roman town.
- The Voconti supplied a Cavalry Unit of Roman Auxiliaries to the Roman Army, the ‘Ala Augustae Vocontiorum’, which was based in Trimontium, north of Hadrian's Wall in Britannia.
