La Turbie

  • La Turbie, from turbia meaning trophy in Latin, is a town in the Maritime Alps in the Provence Alpes Cote d’Azur Region of southeastern France.
  • It is 6 miles (10km) from Monaco.

Trophy of Augustus

  • In the town is the Trophy of Augustus or ‘La Trophee des Alpes’, a huge Roman Monument still standing today.
  • The Monument was erected in 14 BCE to mark the Augustus’ victory over the Ligurian tribes and to mark the border between Alpes Maritimae and Italia.
  • The names of the Tribes are inscribed on the monument.
