Vastatio

  • Vastatio was a Roman Military Tactic consisting of devastating the enemy crops and towns over a fifty mile area, and deporting their populations, to deny their armies food or supplies.
  • The German Tribes across the Rhine were subjected to this type of attack.

Carthage

  • In 146 BCE, the Roman Senate voted to use ‘Vastatio’ against the defeated city state of Carthage.
  • However, the story of placing Salt in the earth to ruin the ground is a myth.
