Narona

  • The Ruins of Narona are located next to the village of Vid in Croatia, which holds an Archeological Museum.
  • Narona was a Roman city in the Province of Dalmatia.

    • It was called the Augusteum and is now the Archeological Museum Narona.

Museums

  • Archeological Museum Narona
    • The museum is built over the Remains of the Roman Temple called the Augusteum. On a podium are 15 marble statues of Roman Emperors and their family members excavated from the Temple.
    • Their heads had been broken off by the anti-Pagan laws enacted by Theodosius I (379-395 CE). Two of the heads had been acquired in 1878 by the British Archeologist Arthur Evans, and have since been reunited with their statues.
    • Some of the statues that have been identified are of Germanicus, Drusus, Claudius, Agrippina the Younger, Livia and Vespasian.
    • There is also an Inscription honouring Augustus by the Governor of Dalmatia, Cornelius Dolabella.

Moravian Gate

  • The Moravian Gate is a Pass between two mountain ranges, the Carpathians and the Sudetes, located in the Czech Republic.
  • The Pass allowed traffic on the Amber Road to connect between the Baltic with the Adriatic. Today, the D1 Highway and a railway line travel through the Pass.

Klis Pass

  • Klis Pass is located on the road between Split and Sinj. It is at an altitude of 1,181 feet (360m) and has views overlooking Split and the Adriatic.
  • The Medieval Klis Fortress which defends the Pass, was built over the site of a Roman Fort.

Kapela Pass

  • The Kapela Pass is one of two Passes in the Dinaric Alps between Brinje and Modrus in Croatia and has an altitude of 2,910 ft (887m).
  • The other is the Vratnik Pass at 2,300 ft (700m) between Senj and Brinje.

Josephina Road

  • The Josephina Road was a Salt Road in Croatia in use during the Roman Period which connected the Adriatic with the Pannonian Plain via two Passes through the Dinaric Alps.
  • It started at Senj and ended at Karlovac.

Rondo Island

  • Rondo Island is located 31 miles (50km) north of the Indonesian Island of Sumatra and 79 miles (130km) south of the Indian Island of Great Nicobar.
  • To the north of Rondo lies an International Sea Lane for vessels passing between the Indian Ocean and the Straits of Malacca.

Crossing the Indian Ocean

  • In the Age of Sail, vessels could use the Sixth Parallel of Latitude to navigate safely between the southern tip of Sri Lanka and the Island of Rondo in order to enter the Straits of Malacca.

  • The Singapore Strait lies between the Straits of Malacca and the South China Sea. It is 71 miles (114km) long and 10 miles (16km) wide.
  • The Strait is bounded by Singapore to the north and the Riau Islands of Indonesia to the south.

  • The Eight Degree Channel refers to the Channel between Minicoy and the Maldive Islands to the South.
  • Its name is derived from its position on the Eighth Parallel of Latitude.

International Border

  • It is also known as Maliku Kandu and forms the International Border between India and the Maldives.

  • The Nine Degree Channel is a 124 mile (200km) Channel produced by a gap between Minicoy and its neighbouring islands to the North.
  • Its name derives from its position on the Ninth Parallel of Latitude.
  • It is the International Sea Lane for all shipping passing from the eastern Indian Ocean to the Western Indian Ocean.

  • The Sea Lane for all shipping passing from the eastern Indian Ocean to the Western Indian Ocean is the Nine Degree Channel.

Guardafui Strait

  • The Guardafui Strait lies between Cape Guardafui in Somalia and the island of Socotra in the Arabian Sea.

  • Cape Guardafui is a promontory with a lighthouse in eastern Somalia that projects into the Arabian Sea.

Socotra Archipelago

  • To the east of the Strait lies the Socotra Archipelago of four islands. Socotra is the biggest island.
  • Halfway between Socotra and Cape Guardafui lies the island of Abd al Kuri, which has fresh water.
  • To the east of it is Samhah, then Darsan which is uninhabited.
  • Northwest of Socotra lie two islets known as the ‘White Rocks’.

Somali Coast

  • The Somali Coast south of Cape Guardafui is a lee shore, depending on the currents and winds, and shipwrecks were frequent in the Ancient World.
